Why Pepper Mills Make the Perfect Gift

If you're looking for a gift for a loved one, Pepper Mills are the best kind of gift available. Everyone uses pepper and salt but not everyone has a highly functional peppermill or saltmill.  If you've ever used a pepper mill, you know that it's tough to pick up a pepper shaker after using a mill.  The flavor and scent of freshly ground pepper corns is far superior to pepper from a shaker.  But don't give a loved one a generic pepper mill that was purchased at a store, give them a hand crafted and one of a kind piece!  They'll love the uniqueness and they'll love that you hand selected it for them.  There is not better gift than one that was hand selected and hand crafted like these salt and pepper mills were.

Choosing the Right Hand Crafted Pepper Mill or Salt Mill

With so many beautiful hand made mills to choose from, Paul is often asked how to select the perfect salt or pepper mill.  Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when looking for the right mill, whether it's for you or a friend or loved one:

What type of setting will this mill be placed in?
Generally, people tend to lean toward the lighter colors for pepper mills that are going to be used in a home- especially in a more casual atmosphere.  If the dining area is formal or if the salt or pepper mills will be used in a restaurant, darker woods are often preferred to add a level of sophistication to the setting.

What color are the walls and place settings that the Pepper Mill or Salt Mill will be placed with?
A great way to determine which mills are best for you is to match the tone of the wood to the tone of the place settings and dining area.  If you have darker walls with a light table cloth, for example, a darker mill would act as a great centerpiece or accent piece for the table.

How much use might the mill expect to see?
Because Paul's Turned Peppermills come in a variety of sizes and shapes, it is important to consider how much pepper your mill should hold.  If the mill will get constant use, especially in a culinary environment, a larger peppermill will be ideal.  Generally speaking, the large the peppermill, the longer you can go between refills of pepper corn.  A 8" or 10" peppermill will be plenty sufficient for homes.

Has the person had a pepper mill before?
If the person you are giving a hand made mill to has already had or has a pepper mill or salt mill, you may want to consider giving them a complimentary piece.  Another idea is to give them a mill quite different from the one they have.  Let them choose the mill that best suits their mood or ambience.

The Process of Making a Pepper Mill

One of the things that makes Paul's pepper mills and salt mills so valuable is the pain staking process by which they are created.  Nearly every mill comes from a locally felled tree.  These trees are cut up into sections and the best areas are chosen to be used for peppermills.  The wooden section then has to be cut to size and a hole is drilled all the way through it. This hole acts as the holding chamber for the pepper corns.  The pepper mill or salt mill is then secured on one of Paul's full size woodturning lathes.  The lathe spins the wooden block at high speeds while Paul slowly and carefully shapes the mill using gouges, skews and other tools made from high speed steel.  Once the shape is formed, Paul begins the sanding process, giving each mill a warm and smooth surface.  After sanding, each mill is finished to perfection using natural oils that are easy to maintain and don't detract from the wood's warmth.
Once the mill is drilled, turned, sanded and finished, Paul assembles it using high quality pepper mill mechanisms.  These mechanisms are not the flimsy and weak pieces you'll often find in commercial mills. They are sturdy and reliable, providing you with a lifetime of use without any problems.  Each Pepper Mill or Salt Mill is catalogued and numbered.  Each is unique; truly one of a kind.
